About
Travel back in time to old Japan
Real Japanese history, especially the ninja, for curious people everywhere.

What this site is
Japan Time Machine is made in Japan for people who have never been here but want to know what the country was really like centuries ago. We focus on the ninja (or shinobi), because almost everything the world “knows” about them comes from films, anime and games.
The real story is often odder and more interesting: spies who dressed like farmers, tools that were really garden equipment, and manuals full of advice on weather, food and human psychology.
How we tell it
Every video and article follows the same idea:
- Hanzo proudly shows off a famous ninja technique.
- It goes wrong, and he gets caught.
- “Yeah… I meant to do that.”
- But actually… here is what the historical sources say.
Your guides

The confident student
Hanzo
Young, fast and very sure of himself. Hanzo demonstrates the ninja tricks you know from anime and films. It rarely goes to plan.
“Yeah… I meant to do that.”

The quiet master
Danzo
Hanzo’s teacher. He says little, sighs a lot, and then shows how shinobi really did it, according to the historical record.
“…”
About the pictures
Our artwork is created with the help of AI tools, in a style inspired by Japanese woodblock prints (ukiyo-e). Hanzo and Danzo are original characters made for this project. They are not real historical people.
